Secondary pollutants

Is acid rain a secondary pollutant? What are the primary pollutants? Is smog a secondary pollutant? Primary pollutants include ammonia , sulfur dioxide , nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide.

Secondary pollutants

Secondary pollutants include ground-level ozone, acid rain and nutrient enrichment compounds. These pollutants are not emitted directly from a source (like vehicles or power plants ). Instea they form as a result of the pollutants emitted from these sources reacting with molecules in the atmosphere. The best known of the secondary pollutants are certain gases that are synthesized by photochemical reactions in the lower atmosphere. Unlike primary pollutants, which are air, water or soil pollutants that are emitted directly from a particular source, secondary pollutants pollute our. Secondary Pollutants The pollutants that are emitted directly from a combustion process are called “primary pollutants.

When emitted into the atmosphere, these primary pollutants combine with other reactants and form “secondary” pollutants. An example of a secondary pollutant would be ozone. A primary pollutant is an air pollutant emitted directly from a source.

A secondary pollutant is not directly emitted as such, but forms when other pollutants (primary pollutants) react in the atmosphere. Examples of a secondary pollutant include ozone, which is formed when hydrocarbons (HC) and nitrogen oxides (NOx). Rather they are made in the air using other pollutants. Especially when primary pollutants react or interact with other molecules secondary pollutants are made.

Radioactive pollutants – produced by nuclear explosions, nuclear events, war explosives, and natural processes such as the radioactive decay of radon. Smog is a kind of air pollution. However, secondary pollutants are often, made naturally. Controlling the release of primary pollutants is easier than controlling the ways of secondary pollutant synthesizing.

Secondary pollutants

For example, a secondary pollution would be ozone which is formed when hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides combine in sunlight. H2SOcan cause respiratory problems. NO gives air a brownish coloration.

The pollutants develop as a result of interaction of primary pollutants and environmental constituents. The primary pollutants are “directly” emitted from the processes such as fossil fuel consumption, Volcanic eruption and factories. The major primary pollutants are Oxides of Sulphur, Oxides of Nitrogen, Oxides of Carbon, Particulate Matter,. PANs are secondary pollutants , which means they are not directly emitted as exhaust from power plants or internal combustion engines, but they are formed from other pollutants by chemical reactions in the atmosphere. Secondary standards provide public welfare protection, including protection against decreased visibility and damage to animals, crops, vegetation, and buildings.

Secondary pollutants

The EPA has set National Ambient Air Quality Standards for six principal pollutants , which are called criteria air pollutants. CO is a primary pollutant. Acid rain is a secondary pollutant. Scientists were monitoring a meteor headed toward Earth. These secondary pollutants do not come directly from a source (like vehicles or power plants).

It forms as a result of the pollutants the sources emit and reacting with the molecules in the atmosphere. Its origin lies in the interactions between the primary emissions in the atmosphere. One of the most known secondary pollutants is tropospheric ozone, whose formation and effect will be explained in the following section. The secondary pollutants are not emitted directly. Classic smog from large amounts of coal burning in an area caused by a mixture of smoke and sulfur dioxide.

GEM is a global pollutant that has an atmospheric lifetime in the range of months to years. They differ from secondary pollutants because secondary pollutants must form in the atmosphere, whereas primary pollutants do not.
