Ozone forms when hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides combine in the presence. Acid rain, which is made up of several acidic compounds, forms when sulfur dioxide. Nutrient Enrichment Compounds.


Secondary pollutants can also be formed in other ways. A secondary pollutant is not directly emitted as such, but forms when other pollutants (primary pollutants) react in the atmosphere. The most important secondary pollutant is the Ground Level Ozone or Tropospheric Ozone. Emissions from industrial facilities and electric utilities, motor vehicle exhaust, gasoline vapours , and chemical solvents are some of the major sources of Nox and VOC. Photochemical smog is made up of various secondary pollutants like ozone, peroxyacyl nitrates (PANs), and nitric acid (seen in Figure 2).


Examples of secondary pollutants include photochemical oxidants ( ozone , nitrogen dioxide , sulfur trioxide ) and secondary particulate matter. An example of a secondary pollutant would be ozone. For example, when nitrogen oxides react under conditions of high temperatures, with volatile organic compounds, ground level ozone is created. Most important secondary level Air Pollutants are Ground Level Ozone, Smog and POPs (Persistent Organic Pollutants ). Other secondary pollutants include: smog, nitrogen dioxide,.


These are but a few examples. It is formed from hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxide in the presence of sunlight. Another example is sulfur dioxide released in a power plant or factory from combustion of fossil fuel. In contrast, secondary pollutants are produced by the reactions between primary pollutants and other molecules.


Ground level ozone is a prominent example of secondary pollutants. Primary pollutants are directly emitted into the air by the source. Some pollutants may be both primary and secondary : they are both emitted directly and formed from other primary pollutants.


Rather, they form in the air when primary pollutants react or interact. An important example of a secondary pollutant is ground level ozone — one of the many secondary pollutants that make up photochemical smog. Which are more harmful primary or secondary pollutants ? Ans- They emit carbon monoxide which is one of the biggest contributors (by weight) to air pollution.


Though these statistics are horrifying, secondary pollutants can be more harmful and severe to human health than primary pollutants. Smog is an example of a secondary pollutant. One typical example of secondary pollutants is acid rain formed when sulfur dioxide or nitrogen oxides react with water. The primary pollutants that cause the creation of these gases are nitrogen oxide gases and hydrocarbons. They differ from secondary pollutants because secondary pollutants must form in the atmosphere, whereas primary pollutants do not.


Air pollution includes particulate materials and toxic pollutants that come from many different sources. Particulate materials include large particles, such as dust, lead or asbestos, and small particles, including nitrates and sulfates. They are good markers for the source of VOCs as either biogenic or anthropogenic, which is useful in the study of global and local effects of pollutants.
